Medical/Surgical Department

Clay County Hospital is a 22 bed JCAHO accredited hospital.  Medical/Surgical is a 20 bed unit providing care to a variety of patients; pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics 24 hours a day.  The average length of stay is 3.9 days and is recalculated on a monthly basis.  There is an emphasis on quality of life and prevention of real or potential life threatening problems via the nursing process.  Patients present with a variety of medical disorders, including but not limited to Acute MI, adult pneumonia, COPD, CHF, CVA, thrombophlebitis, acute and chronic infectious diseases, trauma, abdominal vaginal surgical patients.  Observation and extended care patients are also cared for in this department. 

Nursing care is provided by an experienced nursing staff that includes Registered Nurses (RN's), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA's). A copy of our staffing plan can be obtained here. The nursing staff is responsible for providing your 24-hour care.


What to expect during your visit:

When you arrive on the Medical/Surgical unit you can expect to be greeted by your staff members.  Your C.N.A. will weigh you, take your vital signs, and help you get dressed in attire that will accommodate your medical treatment.  Your nurse will meet with you and take down your medical history.  She will also assess your status and medical needs.  You will most likely have an intravenous catheter that will allow the staff to give you medications as your doctor has ordered. 

During a typical day, you will be awakened around 5:00 a.m. for your lab work.  The staff will tidy up your bedside table and room to prepare you for breakfast.  The staff changes at 7:00 a.m. Between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. your vital signs will be retaken and breakfast will be served.  Your doctor will be in sometime between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m., most days.  The staff will assist you with your personal hygiene between 8:00 a.m. and noon.  Lunch is served at noon.  The afternoon will include tests and perhaps a rest period.  If you have had surgery the staff will be assisting you to walk in the halls and in your room every three (3) to four (4) hours during the day.  Supper will be served at 5:00 p.m.  Vital signs are taken throughout the day about every four (4) hours or as your doctor has requested.  The staff will assist you to get ready to sleep between 8:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.  The staff will check you every hour quietly through the night and will give you any medications or treatments your doctor has ordered.
